Jul 30, 2007 - Ever wonder if you would make the cut for CBS's hit show Survivor? Here's a chance to find out. Orenda Springs, an experiential learning center in Marcellus, is holding a Survivor style challenge this weekend. "One, two, three... left!" Walking on a set of wooden planks together with five other people may seem easy, but it isn't. Especially if you don't know your teammates. The challenge is just one of about a dozen you'll face in Saturday's Survivor - The Alps competition. There will be hiking, crawling, climbing, canoeing and even an eating contest across the 130 acre course. Some of the games will be individual tests, others you'll need teammates to finish. "If you work together, you're going to get across," says John Powers, who started the center three years ago. "If you don't work together, you've got to start over again." You learn how to problem solve and communicate. It's a bonding tool many schools and companies use. "We take teams out here and we get them to work out the bugs about working together as a team and we teach them skills that will make them work more efficiently," says Powers, who has been an Adventure Educator for nearly 30 years. Mary Beth Murray, a teacher, says the outdoor course is an educational paradise. "I can see gifts, talents and strengths an individual has that I may never see in a classroom." One of the challenges at Orenda Springs is to get high. Spiritually emotionally and physically, without any drugs. And it works. Kids get excited about learning and leave with a real sense of self motivation. "When they come out here there's a variety of activities they become good at," Powers says. "And it's scary enough and frightful enough so when they go home, they can say look what I did. They tell me that this has changed their lives and they realize they can do this and if they can do this, they can do anything." Adventure education tests your creative side, too, and it doesn't matter what physical shape you are in. "Just go a little bit farther than you think you can go and you'll be amazed that you can go even farther than that." Another bonus? There is no getting voted off in this Survivor! Registration for Survivor: The Alps starts at 9am, Saturday, August 4th at Orenda Springs located off Route 174 at 4939 Lawless Road in Marcellus. The trail run and nature hike are $15 per person or $35 per clan. Proceeds will benefit the learning center.
